Although every patient is unique, learning more about how neurofeedback works and what results it can produce can help you make an informed decision about the process. Below are the most frequently asked questions from our users.
Also known as neurotherapy, this system uses technology that identifies patterns and irregularities in the brain in a noninvasive way. It involves a machine equipped with electrodes that measure brain activity to assess how the brain is functioning. Once a map of our brain has been created (or “brain mapping”—explained later), a series of visual and/or auditory exercises is designed to help balance the altered patterns.
With this system, results can be achieved for anyone. We can use it to improve our brain performance, and it can also treat medical conditions, depending on how the program is applied. For example, athletes, students, and other professionals use neurofeedback as a way to optimize their brains to achieve peak performance.
On the other hand, the most common conditions that show positive results with neurofeedback include anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), stroke and brain injuries, memory loss, and insomnia, among others.
Neurofeedback has a high success rate for many conditions, especially anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism. It helps both adults and children (of any age) who are dealing with a variety of conditions caused by a brain imbalance.
The best way to determine how effective neurofeedback is for you is to schedule a consultation. You’ll have the opportunity to explain what you’re going through and learn how this process can help you. Because each case is unique, an initial brain assessment may be recommended to determine which approach will help you feel better or significantly reduce your symptoms. This evaluation will produce a map of your brain, which will indicate the possible presence of irregular brainwave patterns, helping us determine whether neurofeedback is the best option.
Brain mapping shows the results of a brain assessment used to determine and evaluate the brain’s current state. You will discover the pattern of brain waves that is causing your problems. During the EEG scan, a series of electrodes will be temporarily placed on your scalp, and built-in sensors will monitor and measure your brain’s electrical activity. This scan is painless and stress-free and lasts about 40 minutes. A brain assessment is the first step in the neurofeedback process and is used to evaluate your current state by measuring five types of brain waves. Once the test is complete, we will evaluate the results by examining the details of each individual wave—including those that may be out of balance—and select the treatment plan to achieve optimal results.
Neurofeedback will not affect your personality; it will simply train your brain to function more efficiently and improve your mental balance and overall mood. Most patients feel calmer, less stressed, and find that they can concentrate much better after starting neurofeedback sessions, but the process does not change their personality, beliefs, or memory.
We’ll start with an initial evaluation and analysis to determine how neurofeedback can best help you. In the next step, our team will create a protocol tailored to your specific conditions and symptoms. Once we have a treatment plan in place, you’ll visit our office once or twice a week for a neurofeedback session lasting about 45 minutes. During the session, you’ll relax while watching and listening to images and sounds of your choice, as various sensors on your head monitor the areas of the brain being trained. You’ll find this experience relaxing and enjoyable—a way to pause and “recharge your batteries”—while the treatment works to alleviate the symptoms you’re experiencing. As you participate in neurofeedback sessions on a consistent basis, your brain will become increasingly adept at maintaining a healthy brainwave pattern on its own.
Most patients find the neurofeedback process and training to be relaxing, and some people experience immediate relief and instant results, but every patient is different. Most of our clients begin to feel the benefits of neurofeedback training within 2 weeks or 4–8 sessions.
Since neurofeedback works to train your brain to form more effective connections and bring about positive changes, the results are long-lasting. Completing the neurofeedback process is like learning a new skill—from riding a bike to swimming or crocheting—and once you’ve acquired that skill, you keep it forever.
Since neurofeedback therapy is a treatment that does not involve the use of pills or other substances, it does not interfere with your current medication. Certain medications, such as benzodiazepines, may affect the results of neurofeedback.
Over the past four decades, very few adverse effects have been reported, and neurfeedback is considered safe for all patients.
